Willy Pogány (1882–1955), “Tannhäuser” illustration from the book Walk Me Through My Dreams: A Picture Book of Verses (1911) by Joe Lindsay.
I think he’s playing a lute but it kinda looks like he’s attempting to shoot the monstrous manifestation of his own religio-psycho-sexual issues with a gun, and yes, that is a perfect representation of Tannhäuser.
